Early PC based 360 apps make first progress

Yes that's right, we've already got a few resourceful fellows who have managed to create some new applications to be used in conjunction with your Xbox 360.

First up is Xplorer 360. This tool apparently empowers the user with full read/write support to an Xbox 360's hard drive or memory card, meaning the ability to dump all your saves to your PC or download other people's saves from the Intarweb and upload them to your 360.

This software is still in a fairly early beta stage but quite astonishing progress is being made, with almost every eager cheater who downloads the software acting as a beta tester.

It's too early to say whether downloading someone elses completed game save to a 360 would also bestow the gamerscore normally awarded for such an achievement to the profile in use. Good or bad, you can decide for yourself at 360 GameSaves.

Next piece of innovation is a partly functioning Web Browser for your 360 that operates via the Media Center Extender, from the bright-spark, Anthony Park. Users running Windows XP MCE only will have access to this one (I don't honestly know if you need Media Center for the game save one).

This too is in the early stages of development, so at the moment there is no way to input text of any kind, whether it be stuff within a page or URL's themselves. All website addresses must be input and configured through Media Center.

Still, it shows that there are a lot of clever people out there already working on making our 360's more functional than Microsoft even intended.

There will always be a big market for these "tools"!

Cool...but I don't get why you need to save files or browse the internet from your 360...I mean you have a PC or labtop to do that already!!!!!!!!what is the point?. I guess some people have too much time on their hands. And speaking of PC, I hope microsoft can balance PC and console titles on the xbox 360...you know. The likes of Quake 4 and oblivion is good as long as there are alot console like titles like DOA4 or perfect dark to balance out the PC ports. Another thing I don't get all of this "PS3 is way more powerful bit"..yeah that is true of the Cell CPU, but both the 360 and PS3 have 512MB of RAM, and the Xbox 360 "likely" actually has a more capable GPU because of the unified shader stuff and the embedded EDRAM. And with the 360 you can determine were the 512MB of memory goes unlike the PS3 and the fixed 256MB each for the CPU and GPU. So the PS3 will have more power because of the Cell CPU processor, but what will be the finiancial cost of the extra power...remember to make a game look better it takes more resources and money so if a company wants to make a game look better on the PS3 than the Xbox 360 they would need to spend more money and time. If the PS3 is launched next year the 360 will already have a library of good games out and I bet Sony will have the more powerful machine and it could do wonders for the a high price of development and more complexity of hardware and less simpler design tools, but the 360 I am guessing will be the cheap alternative for many companies....you know three core design..simple to design for thanks to XNA and directx tools...Sony and it's president are promising super visuals, but within a year will most companies want to spend that extra money when the capable 360 is a simpler yet very powerful alternative. That is a advantage for Microsoft!!!!!will most companies be willing to spend the type of money needed to take advantage of the PS3 or will they just turn to Microsoft for simpler design, cheaper production costs, powerful yet more cost effective and easy to use XNA and DirectX game tools. Microsoft could by 2007 make themselves look like the cheaper, more cost effective, more realised, easy to develop for...yet still fully untapped power console player...a powerful message indeed. And throw in a dicy Media format , and I choose microsoft. Microsoft has stuck with the dvd format, not will to support a unproven format like sony has, and designed a powerful, simple console that uses windows based tools for game creation. It's great!!! alots of power, little price, small design, easy design tools, normal media storage..lets see how sony will do!!!!!!!! I think the 360 will be the new playstation..sony is going way to complication while microsoft is KISS (keeping it simple stupid) ...a move that might pay off big time.
